About the decay of surface waves on viscous fluids without surface tension

Gerhard Ströhmer (2003)

Banach Center Publications

We study the decay of the motions of a viscous fluid subject to gravity without surface tension with a free boundary at the top. We show that the solutions of the linearization about the equilibrium state decay, but not exponentially in a uniform manner. We also discuss the consequences of this for the non-linear equations.

An Analog of the Tricomi Problem for a Mixed Type Equation with a Partial Fractional Derivative

Kilbas, Anatoly, Repin, Oleg (2010)

Fractional Calculus and Applied Analysis

Mathematics Subject Classification 2010: 35M10, 35R11, 26A33, 33C05, 33E12, 33C20.The paper deals with an analog of Tricomi boundary value problem for a partial differential equation of mixed type involving a diffusion equation with the Riemann-Liouville partial fractional derivative and a hyperbolic equation with two degenerate lines. By using the properties of the Gauss hypergeometric function and of the generalized fractional integrals and derivatives with such a function in the kernel, the uniqueness...

Analysis and numerical approximation of a parabolic-hyperbolic transmission problem

Boško Jovanović, Lubin Vulkov (2012)

Open Mathematics

In this paper we investigate a mixed parabolic-hyperbolic initial boundary value problem in two disconnected intervals with Robin-Dirichlet conjugation conditions. A finite difference scheme approximating this problem is proposed and analyzed. An estimate of the convergence rate is obtained.

Application of complex analysis to second order equations of mixed type

Guo Chun Wen (1998)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

This paper deals with an application of complex analysis to second order equations of mixed type. We mainly discuss the discontinuous Poincaré boundary value problem for a second order linear equation of mixed (elliptic-hyperbolic) type, i.e. the generalized Lavrent’ev-Bitsadze equation with weak conditions, using the methods of complex analysis. We first give a representation of solutions for the above boundary value problem, and then give solvability conditions via the Fredholm theorem for integral...

Asymptotic behaviour of a class of degenerate elliptic-parabolic operators: a unitary approach

Fabio Paronetto (2007)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We study the asymptotic behaviour of a sequence of strongly degenerate parabolic equations t ( r h u ) - div ( a h · D u ) with r h ( x , t ) 0 , r h L ( Ω × ( 0 , T ) ) . The main problem is the lack of compactness, by-passed via a regularity result. As particular cases, we obtain G-convergence for elliptic operators ( r h 0 ) , G-convergence for parabolic operators ( r h 1 ) , singular perturbations of an elliptic operator ( a h a and r h r , possibly r 0 ) .

Boundary value problems with continuous and special gluing conditions for parabolic-hyperbolic type equations

B. Eshmatov, E. Karimov (2007)

Open Mathematics

In the present paper we study the unique solvability of two non-local boundary value problems with continuous and special gluing conditions for parabolic-hyperbolic type equations. The uniqueness of the solutions of the considered problems are proven by the “abc” method. Existence theorems for the solutions of these problems are proven by the method of integral equations. The obtained results can be used for studying local and non-local boundary-value problems for mixed-hyperbolic type equations...

Degenerating Cahn-Hilliard systems coupled with mechanical effects and complete damage processes

Christian Heinemann, Christiane Kraus (2014)

Mathematica Bohemica

This paper addresses analytical investigations of degenerating PDE systems for phase separation and damage processes considered on nonsmooth time-dependent domains with mixed boundary conditions for the displacement field. The evolution of the system is described by a degenerating Cahn-Hilliard equation for the concentration, a doubly nonlinear differential inclusion for the damage variable and a quasi-static balance equation for the displacement field. The analysis is performed on a time-dependent...

Density-dependent incompressible fluids with non-Newtonian viscosity

F. Guillén-González (2004)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

We study the system of PDEs describing unsteady flows of incompressible fluids with variable density and non-constant viscosity. Indeed, one considers a stress tensor being a nonlinear function of the symmetric velocity gradient, verifying the properties of p -coercivity and ( p - 1 ) -growth, for a given parameter p > 1 . The existence of Dirichlet weak solutions was obtained in [2], in the cases p 12 / 5 if d = 3 or p 2 if d = 2 , d being the dimension of the domain. In this paper, with help of some new estimates (which lead...
